1 American Opinion Publishing: 20th Century Heroes (First Edition)
Appleton, WI American Opinion Publishing 2000 First Edition Hardcover Fine Fine Hardcover
First edition. C. S. Lewis loathed politics. It is paradoxical that he (as well as G. K. Chesterton) is featured as a hero in this book published by the John Birch Society. Black cloth boards with gilt lettering in colorful dust wrapper. Both book and dust wrapper are fine. $5“I believe that if we had not fallen...patriarchal monarchy would be the sole lawful government. But since we have learned sin, we have found, as Lord Acton says, that 'all power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.' The only remedy has been to take away the powers and substitute a legal fiction of equality. The authority of father and husband has been rightly abolished on the legal plane, not because this authority is in itself bad (on the contrary, it is, I hold, divine in origin), but because fathers and husbands are bad. Theocracy has been rightly abolished not because it is bad that learned priests should govern ignorant laymen, but because priests are wicked men like the rest of us. Even the authority of man over beast has had to be interfered with because it is constantly abused.”- C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory

C. S. Lewis: A Biography, A. N. Wilson
2 A. N. Wilson C. S. Lewis: A Biography
W. W. Norton & Company 2002 0393323404 / 9780393323405 Paperback New Paperback
Brilliant. Agnostic. Prejudiced. Gregarious. Bullying. Loyal friend. Heavy drinker. One of the most learned scholars of his generation. A controversial Christian apologist. Author of a children's fantasy that has sold millions upon millions of copies. And, after his death, almost a cult figure. C. S. Lewis was an incredibly complicated man, and, as revealed in this splendid biography, a mystery to those who knew him best. "I know of no modern biographer who equals Wilson's delicacy of touch and sensitivity to human quandaries. An astonishing book." Leon Edel "The mixture presented in Wilson's biography of the life of learning...of domestic drama and bad temper, religion, and sex, is irresistible." New York Review of Books

5 Armand M. Nicholi Jr. The Question of God: C.S. Lewis and Sigmund Freud Debate God, Love, Sex, and the Meaning of Life
Free Press 2003-07-29 074324785X / 9780743247856 Paperback New Paperback
Throughout the ages, many of the world's greatest thinkers have wrestled with the concept of -- and belief in -- God. It may seem unlikely that any new arguments or insights could be raised, but the twentieth century managed to produce two brilliant men with two diametrically opposed views about the question of God: Sigmund Freud and C. S. Lewis. They never had an actual meeting, but in "The Question of God, " their arguments are placed side by side for the very first time. For more than twenty-five years, Armand Nicholi has taught a course at Harvard that compares the philosophical arguments of both men. In "The Question of God, " Dr. Nicholi presents the writings and letters of Lewis and Freud, allowing them to "speak" for themselves on the subject of belief and disbelief. Both men considered the problem of pain and suffering, the nature of love and sex, and the ultimate meaning of life and death -- and each of them thought carefully about the alternatives to their positions. The inspiration for the PBS series of the same name, "The Question of God" does not presuppose which man -- Freud the devout atheist or Lewis the atheist-turned-believer -- is correct in his views. Rather, readers are urged to join Nicholi and his students and decide for themselves which path to follow.

Oxford University of Oxford Press at Clarendon Press 1963 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine No Jacket Hardcover
Bennett was an Inkling and C. S. Lewis was a contributor. Many of the Inklings wrote about Arthurian subjects. When Lewis gave up the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Cambridge, it was given to Bennett. Blue cloth boards with plain covers and gilt text on the spine. 147pp. There is a bit of marginalia in pencil, lightly written in pencil and informative. The book is very nice. Near fine. Lacking dust wrapper. $35“Bennett studied first at University of Auckland, where he is described by biographer James McNeish as "poor and deserving" before going on to Merton College, Oxford, where, still indigent, he survived on a diet of Cornish pasties. In McNeish's book Dance of the Peacocks, he is noted as a member of what was to be described in British academe as the Oxford "New Zealand Mafia" (pp. 356–364), a loose-knit group of extraordinarily gifted young men from New Zealand who studied - many were Rhodes Scholars at Oxford University - before the Second World War. The link between them was to endure for the rest of their lives. It included John Mulgan, Dan Davin, James Munro Bertram, Desmond Patrick Costello, Charles Brasch, Norman Davis and Ian Milner. McNeish describes Bennett as "at an angle, separated by the exuberance of his scholarship, his saintliness, and his forgetfulness ...he considered himself lucky to have received the Scholarship [to Oxford], since he forgot to include any testimonials with his application”.”- Wikipedia

The dust wrapper has angular cuts, both top and bottom of the front flap which appear to be from the printer, the $2.50 price remains. $60“It is a profound mistake to imagine that Christianity ever intended to dissipate the bewilderment and even the terror, the sense of our own nothingness, which come upon us when we think about the nature of things. It comes to intensify them. Without such sensations there is no religion. Many a man, brought up in the glib profession of some shallow form of Christianity, who comes through reading Astronomy to realize for the first time how majestically indifferent most reality is to man, and who perhaps abandons his religion on that account, may at that moment be having his first genuinely religious experience. . . . Christianity does not involve the belief that all things were made for man.” ―C.S. Lewis, Miracles

18 C. S. Lewis Perelandra (Signed letter laid in)
London John Lane, The Bodley Head 1943 Third Printing Hardcover Good Hardcover
Laid in is a typed letter to Mr. Mortimer. It reads:"REF.REF.432/44. Magdalen College, Oxford. 18th. August 1944.Dear Mr. Mortimer, I'm so sorry to have missed you when you called; as things now are with me, I'm afraid I see no prospect of having the pleasure of a meeting with you before the 22nd. But I hope for better luck on your next visit to Oxford. My duty to the un-green lady. yours sincerely, " signed in blue ink, C. S. Lewis. Inside the front cover is the name J. L. Mortimer. The paper, as is often the case with Lewis correspondence is cut from a full sheet. It is only three inches tall. Also laid in is a slip of paper printed in red ink reading "With the Author's Compliments.” Lewis was a paper miser. Was this just due to his natural conservativeness? Or, was it due to war shortages of paper. More likely the latter and his heavy load of correspondence. He often cut off parts of paper for correspondence, as in this case. Also, he frequently wrote a book manuscript on the back of a past manuscript, and then threw them away when both sides were used. We book dealers really cringe at that one. Blue cloth boards with black text on the spine. 256pp. The well worn book is good only. Faded spine. Cocked. Some foxing. The typed document shows some browning.
