This volume is from the estate of Ellison Adger Smyth (1847-1942), a Charleston-native who served for 14 years as the president of the South Carolina Cotton Manufacturers Association. Smyth was one of the first to build textile mills and was the first to install incandescent lighting in his mill at Pelzer, SC. He also pushed for child labor laws and compulsory education. This volume mentions Smyth several times (pp 406, 424, 436, 439) and there are photos of Pelzer Mills on page 151. Bound with paper-case boards and a green cloth spine. Covers show modest wear with rubbed spine and bumped corners. No writing or markings in the book. Mild foxing to first and last pages, but majority of text is clean and crisp (though tanned). Illustrated with colored map of SC and numerous b&w photos. Fold-out chart near center is in good condition but protrudes slightly from the textblock. Small split at top edge of interior hinge. Binding tight and square. A neat volume with historical significance. Full refund if not satisfied.
