The Yale Edition of Horace Walpole's Correspondence. Includes the Prospectus with frontispiece portrait and tissue guard. Edited by Wilmarth S. Lewis. Original cloth. New Haven, CT: Yale University Press, 1937-1983. The complete 48 volumes (in 47, as published). Very Good. First editions. Volumes 17-48 have covers; some covers acceptable only. Lewis inscribed the first volume: "To Ralph Brown, from W. S. Lewis. New Haven, November [?] 1937." Ralph Brown was an assistant editor of this Correspondence while a student at Yale, later returning to Yale as an Associate Dean. This set was his own, purchased by him as they were published. It is extremely rare and fortunate to find a complete set of this masterpiece, beautifully maintained by the person who collected them, and subsequently by his family and by one further student of English history. Except for the inscription by the author, there are no markings of any kind on or within the books themselves. Horace Walpole was the son of Great Britain's first Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole. From his position of privilege, he knew everybody of importance in politics and society, traveled extensively in Europe collecting art works, and making cogent, witty, sometimes malicious comments to his many correspondents. This is the only edition, the product of some thirty years of scholarship, that contains both letters he wrote, and his correspondents' return letters to him. They give context to that brilliant period of English history, the mid-18th Century. Due to this set's size and/or weight, additional shipping will be needed. Full refund if not satisfied.
