A solid copy overall with a very good binding and tight text-block throughout. Many copies were lost in the fire at Harper in 1853. This Bible was printed nearly 15 years before the Civil War began and is generally regarded as the publishing event of the 1800s. It is the most heavily illustrated Bible ever printed. It features over 1,600 detailed illustrations (many by designs by J, G. Chapman). About 200 illustrations cover one-third of the page. There are also over 1,000 florally ornamented initial drop-letters, each one unique with no repeats. Harper & Brothers commissioned many artists over a 6-year period to produce these 1,600 illustrations. This Bible was also the first known example of using electrotype technology to reproduce original woodcut engraved illustrations. This was so costly that the publisher had to sell the Bible in 54 parts from 1843 to 1846, using the money from the subscribers to pay for the ongoing production until it was completed. The famous woodcut engraver and author W. J. Linton said that he knew of ?no other book like this, so good, so perfect in all it undertakes". This copy belonged to William Kirk Hinman whose initials (W. K. H.) are in gold gilt lettering on the front and rear cover. Hinman's Family Record is nicely handwritten on the Marriage page at the end of the Apocryphal book section. This edition is renowned for its detailed center-column cross-references which show the many places where the Apocrypha is quoted or referenced in both the Old Testament and in the New. No Bible before or after it has offered such a detailed analysis of Apocrypha references.
