As Tolkien grew more famous he received a huge number of invitations to go, travel paid, to events all over the world and, often, to receive awards at these events. He almost always declined. But he did accept an invitation from his Dutch publisher to attend a Hobbit Dinner in Rotterdam. On March 28, 1958 Tolkien spoke to about 200 people at the event.
