London: Thomas Smith, Bloomsbury, London, 1726, 1726. First Edition. Hardcover. FIRST EDITION. Rebound, hardcover in very good condition. Collectanea Anglo-Minoritica, or A Collection of the Antiquities of the English Franciscans, or Friers Minors, commonly called Gray Friers. In Two Parts. With an Appendix concerning the English Nuns of the Order of Saint Clare. Compiled and Collected by A.P. (Anthony Parkinson) Printed by Thomas Smith, Bloomsbury, London, 1726. A very rare copy of the 1726 first edition of this book. Per Lanna Antique, Perth, United Kingdom: "Perhaps timely as The Gray Friars have received a lot of attention in the news recently with their connection with the discovery of the buried body of Richard the Third. This book contains reference to Richard the Third in the entries for the year 1485 (on page 209), the book refers to: 'III. King Richard the Third (or rather the Duke of Glocester) having waded through a Flood of Royal Blood to the Throne of England, was kill'd, this Year, on the 22th of August, at Bosworth-Fight, in Leicestershire, and carried off the Field of Battle in an inglorious and indecent Manner (being laid all naked a-cross the back of a Horse) to Leicestershire, from whence he came but the Day before with the greatest Pomp and Magnificence, and was there buried, dishonourably, in the Church of the Gray Friers, after he had usurp'd the Crown for Two years and two Months. So stow and others.'" Pages through xxviii include the Preface, A Catalogue of the Books and Authors Quoted in this Work, A Catalogue of Provincial Ministers of the Franciscan Province of England, and An Index to the First Part + the single Errata page. Pages 1-265 are titled "The Antiquities of the English Franciscans". Pages 267-272 are "A Short Supplement". The "Second Part", then, begins with The Preface, An Alphabetical Index, of Places and Convents (pages i-viii), and contains 42 pages of text. Finally is "The Appendix Concerning the English Nuns of the Order of St. Clare and Their Houses heretofore in England" (pages 1-4, plus a Preface). The final, unpaginated page lists Errata. This edition has 4 total engraved plates: 1) Title page, then blank pages, then plate verso to page iii; 2) xxviii single page Errata, then blank page, then plate 2 verso to title page 1 entitled "The Antiquities of the English Franciscans."; 3 & 4) Within "The Second Part", engraving after page 42, then blank page, then engraving on verso page. The Appendix, and 4th engraving recto to that Appendix title. Hardcover. This book has been rebound in red half leather, and red cloth. The spine bears gilt embossing and decoration. The inside front endpaper has had the previous owner's bookplate from King's College, London and crest pasted down and stamped "cancelled" in blue ink. Also on this page is an ex-libre label which reads: "Theology, University Depository". Cover and spine show wear, particularly to the edges, some scuffs, rubbing, and discoloration. The inner, front-hinge contains a crack, though the integrity of the binding is solid. All leaves are securely bound, and are complete. Leaves are in sturdy, beautiful condition with no tears or creasing, yet show age discoloration and some foxing and light staining as would be expected. Text is dark, legible and fully intact -- no blemish compromises the texts comfortable readability. Virtually no marginalia with the exception of "explanatory notation" in pencil indicating "by Anthony Parkinson" twice within the introductory pages. Overall a very good copy in a solid binding, holding a fascinating piece of 18th century history. Dimensions: 8 and 13/16" high x 7 and 2/16 wide x 1" thick. Full refund if not satisfied. Very Good.
