Brookline, Massachusetts: The Queen's Shop, 1909. Limited First Edition. Hardcover. DEDICATION COPY, INSCRIBED TO DEDICATEES. LIMITED, FIRST EDITION, 1909. Limited to 420 copies. Inscribed by the author. Bound in quarter beige cloth and textured brown paper boards. Covers are plain. Dark brown label stamped in gilt lettering adorns the spine. Deckled edges. Leaves are handmade cream, watermarked, laid paper with black text. Contents include: The Painting of the Sleigh; The Golden Dog; The Harvest of the Hop; The Inn In Repose; Mildred and Hi Hosmer; Phoebe Laughs; A Fore-Noon Game; The White Lie; Josey the Shepherd; The Queen of the Barroom; Mildred the Shepherdess; Phoebe Disappears; Sunda at the Sleigh; The Closing of 'The Dog'; 'Sunday Children'; The Mountaineers; Mildred and Philip; Phoebe Returns; The town Meeting; The Robber is Caught; The Burning of 'The Dog'; and 'Bringing in the Sheaves'. Occasionally ornamented with a small engravings initials, and decorative headpieces atop some pages. The last page notes, "Only four hundred and twenty copies of this the first edition have been printed from type on Italian hand-made paper in The Queen's Shop in the year nineteen hundred and nine." An insert laid in, (matching the paper and type of the textblock) reads, "TO THE PUBLIC: Of the four hundred and twenty copies issued of this book the only ones that are bound by the author in the Queen's Shop bindery are the copies subscribed for. With this exception of the binding, the book, as sold to the public on and after publication day, is entirely made by the Queen's Shop, the private press and bindery of Daniel Edwards Kennedy [author]...." A list of names of these subscribers are printed in this copy within the introductory pages. 331 pp.

CONDITION: In overall very good condition, cover shows some wear and light soiling. A 1.5" tear appears in the cloth at the foot of the spine at the front joint, yet does not compromise the integrity of the binding. Light foxing at edges. Uncut pages at the head. Pages are bright and the text is bold. A delightful copy with the feeling of something very special about it.
