January 1, 1869." Books signed or inscribed by MacDonald are uncommon. There is a penciled note on the back of the first front end paper which says the book is from Miss Gurney's library. Macmillan, [1868]. First edition. Blue cloth boards with Macmillan device on front cover and spine. Undated title page in red blue and black. 332 pp. All correct for the first edition according to Shaberman (#39). The first six leaves have tape or tape residue at the hinge.
