Mere Christianity (first edition)
London: Geoffrey Bles, 1952. First Edition. Hardcover. Many polls at the end of the twentieth century found this to be the most influential Christian book of the 1900s. It started with Lewis giving four series of talks on BBC during World War II. These series were published as three small books but eventually they were combined into this one classic.
Blue cloth boards with silver text on the spine. 177 pp. The dust wrapper is red with white text.
Recently we have been working on the two different states of the dust wrapper for the first edition of Mere Christianity. What we believe to be the first state has no reviews on the flaps of the wrapper and a blank back flap. What we believe to be the second state has reviews on the front flap that continue on to the back flap. We believe this to be the second state because we believe this to be the exact dust wrapper on the second printing. We know of no authoritative source for this distinction. The dust wrapper on this copy is second state.
The book is VG with the covers being slightly wavy. An owner's name and date in ink on the first front end paper. The final leaf of the book is blank but an owner has neatly written a page and a half of notes.
