Testimony Taken by the Joint Select Committee to Inquire into the Condition of Affairs in the Late Insurrectionary States. ALABAMA. Volume II. 42nd Congress, Second Session.(First Edition)(Ku-Klux Conspiracy)

Government Printing Office. First Edition. Hardcover. During the presidency of Ulysses S. Grant, a notable event was the passage of the Ku Klux Klan Act on April 20, 1871, which provided federal authority to combat the group and enforce the 14th Amendment. The 1872 report by the Joint Select Committee on the Condition of Affairs in the Late Insurrectionary States documented widespread Ku Klux Klan violence aimed at suppressing the political rights of African Americans and their allies during Reconstruction. Testimony gathered for the 13-volume report revealed graphic accounts of violence and highlighted the failures of local governments to protect citizens, ultimately leading to the passage of federal enforcement acts.
