Songs from a Valley (First Edition)

Chambersburg, PA: Archibald Rutledge / Public Opinion Print, 1919. First Edition. Hardcover. This first edition is a collection of poems by Archibald Rutledge, which features themes characteristic of his work, such as nature and the Southern landscape, personal experiences and introspection, and spirituality through the natural world.

Archibald Rutledge (1883–1973) was a prolific American poet, writer, and educator who is best known as the first Poet Laureate of South Carolina, a position he held for nearly 40 years. Born into a prominent Southern family, his work is deeply rooted in his connection to the natural landscape and hunting traditions of his ancestral home, Hampton Plantation.
