ABOUT THE AUTHOR AND THIS SET: Herbert Wrigley Wilson (1866–1940), often credited as H. W. Wilson, was a British journalist, naval historian, and author known for his detailed contemporary accounts of military and naval conflicts. Primarily a journalist, Wilson served as chief leader writer and assistant editor of the Daily Mail from 1898 until his death. Alfred Harmsworth (Lord Northcliffe), the newspaper’s owner, described him as the “mental backbone” of the paper.
This is one of his best-known works: a two-volume history of the early phases of the Second Boer War (1899–1900), published in 1900–1901 by Harmsworth Brothers. It was issued in weekly parts and later bound into volumes. Wilson followed it with a two-volume supplement, After Pretoria: The Guerrilla War (1902), making a four-volume set overall. The books are notable for their numerous illustrations (photographs, sketches, maps) taken from the front lines and for providing a detailed, pro-British narrative of the campaign up to the occupation of Pretoria.
CONDITION: External covers show moderate wear, especially along the extremities. Leather is stripping in places as is common for sheepskin bindings. Cloth is faded in some spots. Inner hinges have cracked and there are several outer joints which are starting, but boards are still well affixed and bindings are strong and sound. Some discoloration within endpapers. Textblocks have lightly yet evenly toned and are very legible. The photographs and illustrations are marvelous. Completely unmarked. This is a very handsome, sturdy, complete set.
PLEASE NOTE: At over 25 lbs. with packaging materials, due to the size and weight of this set, an additional shipping charge will likely apply and will be requested after purchase. This set will arrive with "signature required" upon delivery. Full refund if not satisfied. Very Good.
