It is a series of lectures delivered by Arthur Penrhyn Stanley (1815–1881), Dean of Westminster and a prominent 19th-century Anglican churchman and historian. The work was originally published in the 1860s (with multiple editions through the 1880s–1900s) and presents the history of ancient Israel as part of ecclesiastical (church) history from a liberal Broad Church perspective.

Volume I: Abraham to Samuel (Part I - The Patriarchal and Early Period). Covers the earliest history of the Jewish people, beginning with the call of Abraham and extending through the patriarchal era, the Exodus, the wilderness wanderings, the conquest of Canaan, the period of the Judges, and up to the ministry of Samuel. Indexed. 472 pp.

Volume II: Samuel to the Captivity (Part II - The Monarchical Period). Continues from the rise of the monarchy under Saul, David, and Solomon through the divided kingdoms (Israel and Judah), the prophetic ministry (especially Elijah, Elisha, Isaiah, Jeremiah, etc.), and ends with the fall of Jerusalem and the Babylonian Captivity. Indexed. 511 pp.

Bound in navy blue cloth, covers bear two blind debossed lines at the head and foot of these matching volumes. Gilt lettering on each spine. Illustrated with maps, some fold-out in both black and white and color. Volume I includes frontispiece portrait of the author in black and white.

CONDITION: Both copies are VG with moderate wear and some soiling. Bumped corners. Inner hinges are cracked or starting, yet boards are still well attached. Unmarked except for handwritten numbers on the endpapers of Volume II. Leaves have lightly toned throughout. A nice, solid copy. Full refund if not satisfied. Very Good.
