The New Testament [Revised Version] of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ Translated out of the Greek: Being the Version Set Forth A. D. 1611 Compared with the Most Ancient Authorities and Revised A. D. 1881. (First American edition.)

Oxford: Oxford University Press, May 20, 1881. First American. Hardcover. In 1870 the Anglican church voted to revise the King James Bible for the first time in over 250 years. They formed a committee of scholars who went to work on it. Americans wanted some American scholars to participate and the British begrudgingly allowed them in on the project. But the contributions of the Americans were almost always rejected. On May 17, 1881 the revised New Testament was printed by Oxford University Press and often referred to as Revised Version (not Revised Standard). It had over 30,000 changes from the King James Version. Americans complained about being mostly excluded from the finished version so on May 20, 1881 Oxford University Press printed a new New Testament with a section at the end showing the suggestions of the American scholars. This is the first American "edition" of the Revised Version of the New Testament.

This copy has 1881 on the title page. Opposite the title page is a page with the following in a block: "This Edition is authorized by the American Committee of Revision. Philip Schaff, President. George E. Day, Secretary. New York, May 20, 1881." Below that block it says Published by Henry Prowde, Oxford Warehouse (with address); C. J. Clay Cambridge Warehouse (with address); and Thomas Nelson & Sons, Oxford Bible Warehouse (with New York address.)

Brown cloth boards with four blind stamped borders on the covers and red page edges. 496 pp. VG condition with minor wear on the extremities and a bit of foxing on the first two leaves. This is an important and collectible Bible. Full refund if not satisfied. Very Good.
