Kinderliederen (First Edition)
Leyden: D. Noothoven Van Goor, 1858. Illustrated. First Edition. Hardcover. Part of a broader 19th-century movement in the Netherlands to create suitable reading and singing material for Protestant children, written entirely in Dutch, this is a collection of children’s songs and poems intended for moral and religious education. The language is simple and rhythmic, making the songs easy for children to learn and sing. Many pieces have a didactic tone typical of 19th-century children’s literature.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Cornelis van Koetsveld (1807–1893), was a Dutch Reformed minister, educator, and writer known for his pastoral and children’s literature.
ABOUT THIS COPY: Bound in dark red cloth with gilt lettering and decoration on the cover and spine. Deckled foredge and foot. Periwinkle blue endpapers. Includes four hand colored plates, all present. Frontispiece is protected by a tissue leaf. 104 pp.
CONDITION: Good minus, external cover shows it's been well loved with rubbing, some soiling, and thread wear along the edges. Front inner hinge has cracked, there is a rub-through spot on the front endpaper, and the title page and second leaf has detached from the binding, but is present and laid in. Unmarked. Pages have evenly toned and are foxed throughout, yet illustrations remain uncompromised, and are delightful.
This is a charming example of mid-19th-century Dutch juvenile literature. While not widely known internationally, it would be of interest to scholars of Dutch children’s literature and religious education history. Full refund if not satisfied. Good -.
