(Evan Morrison) Woodward wrote the Burlington County half, and John F. (John Frelinghuysen) Hageman wrote about Mercer county. Its records general and township narratives, institutions (churches, schools, courts, military, industry), and biographical sketches of living or recently prominent men at the time.
Burlington (one of West Jersey’s oldest counties, organized in the 1690s) covers colonial Quaker settlement along the Delaware and Rancocas, Burlington city as early provincial capital, Revolutionary activity, later townships (Bordentown, Mount Holly, Medford, Pemberton, Little Egg Harbor, and many others as they stood in 1883), the Brotherton / Indian Mills reservation, agriculture, and river and rail commerce.
Mercer treats Trenton as state capital and industrial city, Princeton and the college, the Revolution (Trenton, Princeton, and related campaigns), and rural townships including Hopewell, Ewing, Lawrence, Hamilton, and others. Hageman’s Hopewell chapter is often extracted by local historians: village origins, churches, schools, and family sketches.
ABOUT THIS COPY: This very thick, very large and heavy copy is bound in maroon cloth, covers are plain with gilt lettering on the spine. All edges gilt. Profusely illustrated with plate engravings and maps in black and white, many with protective tissue leaves. Some maps are hand-colored. Dual columned. Indexed. viii, 888 pp. Measures 11 inches tall x 7.75 inches wide x 3 inches thick.
CONDITION: Mild external wear. Inner hinge is cracked at the gutter at the preface, yet boards well affixed and the binding is sound. Title page has been repaired with tape. Numerous small notes on small pieces of paper from a previous owner laid in at the gutter throughout (not affixed). Leaves have lightly, evenly toned yet are unmarked. Moderate musty smell. The numerous engravings and maps are wonderful.
