The Sacred Gift of Life: Orthodox Christianity and Bioethics (First Edition)

Crestwood, New York: St. Vladimir's Seminary Press, 1998. First Edition. Softcover. A systematic examination of contemporary bioethical issues from the perspective of Scripture and Eastern Orthodox patristic tradition.

John Breck, an Orthodox priest, served as Professor of New Testament and Ethics at St. Vladimir’s Seminary (1984–1996) and later as Professor of Biblical Interpretation and Ethics at the St. Sergius Theological Institute in Paris. He writes for both the Orthodox community and a broader Christian readership (including medical professionals). The book draws on biblical teaching and the Church Fathers to address technological advances that raise questions about the creation and ending of human life, while offering a compassionate, principle-based evaluation rather than purely technical analysis.
