From the Banks of the Oklawaha, Volume II: Facts and Legends of the North Carolina Mountains (Signed First Edition)
Hendersonville, North Carolina: Golden Glow Publishing Company, 1977. Adele Kershaw Thornton. First Edition. Hardcover. A scarce signed first edition of Frank L. FitzSimons’s beloved From the Banks of the Oklawaha, Volume II—the essential second installment in the classic three-volume collection of Henderson County and Western North Carolina mountain history, folklore, and storytelling. Drawn from the author’s long-running WHKP radio programs, these pages overflow with hilarious anecdotes, tall tales, local legends, superstitions, biographical sketches, and vivid portraits of mountain life as told by “the old man on the mountain.” Volume I earned the Thomas Wolfe Memorial Literary Award; this companion volume preserves still more of the material that made FitzSimons a regional legend. Illustrated with drawings by Adèle Kershaw Thornton and period photographs.
Signed by the author. Red cloth binding with gilt title on cover and spine, 413 pages. Original white dust jacket. Text block is crisp, clean, square, and sound with only minor shelf wear and darkened edges. The jacket shows honest use—edge wear, darkening, discoloration, and a large repaired tear on the front—but remains complete and protective. A desirable signed association copy of a foundational Western North Carolina title, increasingly hard to find in first edition. Full refund if not satisfied. Very Good / Very Good.
